Pararnos a pensar: ¿Qué me pasa?

The amazing ability to spoil all your plans: Self-sabotage.
There is a great truth that says that man is the only animal capable of stumbling over the same stone twice. Of making the same mistakes in the same situation. Has it ever happened to you?
The curious thing about this fact is that it is not the stone of the road that stands in the way, it is we who go towards it, making the same mistakes over and over again. And it is that, we even take affection for the stone, because it provides us with the excuses we need for having stumbled upon it and therefore not having achieved our objectives.
What if I told you that the most important obstacles when you propose some kind of goal or change are those that your own mind produces? Paradoxical, right?
The ability of the human being to hinder their own plans and objectives at crucial moments to achieve them is called Self-sabotage, with most sabotaging behaviors being unconscious.
The lack of punctuality to not arrive on time to situations that we do not want to face, the lack of commitment at an emotional or work level, the tendency to overeat or consume alcohol, comparisons with other people, the denial of our desires… are some of the most common forms of self-sabotage that provide us with refuge from doing what we should do to improve our lives.
Self-sabotage occurs with the manifestation of beliefs, thoughts and emotions that occur in our minds in important moments of change and in situations that imply taking responsibility, when we must make important decisions whose consequences affect our day to day how changes of employment, entrepreneurship, moving, marriage…
Why do we cause ourselves to fail?
This process occurs unconsciously, mainly due to the fear and uncertainty that causes us to leave our comfort zone. Fear and doubts in the face of the unknown. The fear of failure, but also the fear of success.
“You have been training for months but at the last moment your mind produces a thought that says: no, I am not sufficiently prepared, which causes a blockage and a drop in the energy that your muscles need to compete. Logically you do not reach the goal.”
There are many reasons that explain these unconscious behaviors, but one of the main ones is not knowing very well what you want. Not being clear about your goals. Not knowing the “What” you want or the “Why”, not even knowing the “With Whom” you want a change or “Where” that change is needed.
The most difficult question to answer will always be: What do you want?, before which, all the previous doubts lead you to end your sentences with «I don’t know» and every time you say «I don’t know» you are inviting your subconscious to that you self-sabotage
“Self-sabotage, or the amazing ability to spoil all your plans, is directly proportional to the insecurity you feel due to your doubts, fears and uncertainty. “
What do you really want?
What would improve your life in the aspect you need?
The «I don’t know» pattern is the most effective balm of self-deception.
In our brain there is an internal mechanism that prevents questions from being left unanswered. Take the test, ask yourself any question that comes to mind, if your brain cannot answer exactly, it will automatically resort to the pattern «I don’t know», because it is perfect, it considers the question answered without the necessary content that clarifies the answer. That way you don’t have to work hard.
In short, your brain considers the question answered, but without getting wet, leaving the door open to the internal saboteur, the one who is going to take you away from your purposes when you most need to achieve them.
Being aware that the clearer you are about your motives, what you want, how you want it and when, the less «I don’t know» your brain will produce as it will strive to find a more productive, more specific and more clarifying response.
The Self-sabotage thermometer: symptoms to pay attention to.
The comfort, the security offered by the routine and the environment in which we live within our comfort zone, so difficult to enlarge, to expand to open ourselves to changes, to new experiences that make us grow, along with victimhood, are two of the main causes of self-sabotage. For this we need the stone of the road, to blame her for our failures. We tend to put the responsibility outside of ourselves and focus on everything we lack instead of appreciating what we have and asking ourselves:
What responsibility do I have for what is happening to me?
The fear of failure comes, above all, from our education.
Lack of motivation, of enthusiasm to achieve something new
Low self-esteem that leads us to consider that we are not enough.
All this causes a rise in the thermometer that triggers our internal saboteur. You will know that you are self-sabotaging if you feel identified with some of these behaviors:
procrastination begins with the thought «tomorrow I’ll do it», postponing the necessary action you need to take to change your situation. It’s what you do when you tell yourself, on Monday I start the diet
try to have everything under control, to control our lack of adaptation and insecurity in the face of change.
leave things halfway, without finishing for fear of the result.
seek perfection, perfectionism develops in people with low self-esteem and gives excuses for not finishing tasks because:
How do you know when something is perfect?
All of these are symptoms of self-sabotage, but we must dig deep to see what the root of the real problem is. What is hidden behind these symptoms, these behaviors?
How to get out of Self-sabotage?
Once again, to solve a problem, we must be aware and accept that we have that problem in our lives and that we are living in a situation that we do not like or that seriously harms us.
Stop to think: What happens to me?
Am I where I want to be?
Do I have what I want to have?
Do I do what I need to do?
Who do I want to do it with?
Understanding what our real problem is, leads us to know «What» is what we are needing and what we must work for to change our situation.
We will be able to clearly define it, experience what it will feel like to achieve it, place it in a time frame and mark the actions that will lead us to it, step by step.
The most important part of a Coaching Process is to accompany the person to define their objectives in a Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic way and within a certain period of time.
Motivation is worked on, connecting with the personal values that feed it to ensure that the engine is kept running throughout the entire process.
Beliefs are explored (the mental programs that we have installed since childhood) and that cause us this type of unconscious behavior that we repeat over and over again without realizing it.
Fears and insecurities are also faced. The result is usually the feeling of fullness and well-being caused by having been able to set ourselves a challenge and achieve it, a healthy and strengthened self-esteem, which feeds the bug that pushes us to go for more, to grow, to improve ourselves in life… to feel complete, creative and resourceful people.
Do you dare? Or Do you prefer to keep your stone, just in case you need it on your way?
