Uncertainty: What to do when you don’t know what to do?
The lack of security or certainty about something is called Uncertainty and is usually not pleasant for any of us. In fact, not infrequently we associate uncertainty with doubts, indecisions and problems.
Uncertainty, or the inability to predict an outcome with certainty, always carries an implicit risk of undesirable consequences or unexpected losses.
“The human being is self-contradictory”
Since we are born we are in a process of continuous change, however we spend our lives trying not to change anything so as not to have to go through the uncertainty that changes produce.
We organize our day, we make plans for vacations and weekends, we take refuge in the stability and order that routines give us and in that wonderful feeling that we can control and decide what comes next: we love security.
Uncertainty, on the other hand, awakens our fear of the new, of having to do things differently and above all not knowing: what will it be? How can I do it? How will it affect me? What should I do? …
Changes cause different results than we are used to. But we must not stay there, stuck in fear and doubt of the unknown, because it is precisely that change, that enriches our lives. We just have to learn to manage the uncertainty that they entail because in the end, with each change that we face if it is imposed or each change that we overcome if it is by personal choice is our evolution and personal growth.
“Learning to navigate the changes and the uncertainty that they entail is key to our personal growth”
Each person has a special relationship with the changes and uncertainties that they entail: there are those who get bored of the monotonous repetition of their routines and embrace the changes with joy and expectations for the future, but there are also people who, when in doubt, enter a spiral of fears and fears that leave them paralyzed for some time, unable to make any decision, suffering the frustration that this entails.
It is precisely our relationship with change and fear of uncertainty that keeps us away from well-being:
How do you deal with the changes in your life?
What tolerance do you have for uncertainty?
“Each person travels the path to well-being differently, but it always involves having the ability to adapt to changes in life: knowing how to tolerate the uncertainty that comes with setting foot outside the comfort zone.”
Resistance to change is what takes us away from well-being and happiness, since it is nothing more than the emotional anguish that is experienced in the face of something new and unknown: they are conflicts between our rational and emotional part, between what we know we want, and we must do (needs or desires) and between what stops us and pulls us back (fears)
How could we like uncertainty if it can leave us paralyzed not knowing what to do and, in most cases, fearing negative consequences for us?
We are going to start by saying that the Human Being is NOT programmed physiologically or psychologically to be happy, nor to adapt to change, which means that it is not designed to tolerate Uncertainty.
On the one hand, we are not psychologically programmed to accept change and uncertainty because, until recently, education and society have filled us with limiting beliefs such as:
«It’s bad that things don’t turn out the way I expect them to»
«You cannot fail, the error is synonymous with failure»
When things don’t turn out how we expect, we consider them mistakes, and we associate them with failure, without realizing that it is through mistakes that we learn and grow. Our psychological fear of error and failure is what makes us have a rigid attitude to adapt to new changes.
Fortunately, today more and more work is being done with emotional intelligence in educational systems and work is being done to remove the stigma of error and see it as a source of learning.
On the other hand, we are not physiologically programmed either because our brain, the motor organ from which all the instructions to the body come out, does not like changes, since the brain has a function for us, and that is to guarantee our survival. His specialty is survival, not wellness, and survival requires stability, security, and control. Quite the opposite of what causes uncertainty in the face of change.
“Although uncertainty is a constant in our lives, we have a low tolerance for it, preferring the certainty of bad news to the uncertainty that precedes it. “
But we can train ourselves to deal better with uncertainty.
And being able to face changes with enthusiasm instead of fear and focus on everything new and the opportunities that they bring to our lives, instead of what we are going to lose, which in most cases is only a comfort zone that already smells rancid.
“The best strategy that I can offer you to learn to dance with Uncertainty is to learn and develop Emotional Intelligence”
Emotional Intelligence is the ability to perceive, assimilate and understand your emotions and those of others and teaches, above all, the need to be responsible for oneself.
We must not forget that our behavior is determined by how we interpret the stimuli that provoke our emotions. Situations of uncertainty or not knowing what to do due to fear of a certain result, generate emotions that derive from fear and stress seasoned with constant worry.
Bringing it to life from day to day, those medical results that have you sleepless and with your stomach in a fist, the continuous changes in your company, the decisions of your teenage children…
Understand that we do not have control over any answer to these questions, but if we could focus on what depends exclusively on us, it is the way in which we manage our emotions.
How to adapt to Uncertainty:
An adequate management of uncertainty can be the difference between discomfort caused by fear and anxiety or the serenity of stoicism.
Your area of influence: In crisis situations, concentrate your efforts on tasks that depend exclusively on you and rely on your loved ones.
What can I do in these circumstances that depends on me?
Crises often turn upside down the values with which we measure our world, when you are suffering from the anxiety of uncertainty, ask yourself:
What is it that really matters to me?
You will realize how most of the answers are under your control and you can influence them with your emotional intelligence. Concentrate your thoughts and efforts on them, accepting those that are beyond your control. let them go
Know and identify where your emotions come from and how they affect you
Move your body, play sports whenever possible, or do outdoor activities. Moving the body releases endorphins, neurotransmitters of well-being and pleasure, and helps focus your mind on other activities, preventing your fear from growing.
The uncertainty, sooner or later, will pass. Do not forget to see the crisis as an opportunity to leave behind what did not work for you in your life to begin to get excited about what is to come.
To carry out all this path successfully, you can go through it hand in hand with Emotional Intelligence, which will allow you to:
Identify your emotions and understand where they come from.
Understanding why we feel them and what they want to tell us, what we are missing at all times, from here we can direct our thoughts from concern to occupation. As a consequence of understanding and learning to lower the intensity of our emotions, we can make better decisions that help both us and our environment in the most difficult moments.
If you are immersed in a process of change and the uncertainty that it entails, you can go through it with the support offered by a coaching process with emotional intelligence.
Happy week!
